Cultivating Green: Sustainable practices in the cannabis industry

Sustainability is more than a word; it's a movement shaping industries worldwide, including cannabis cultivation. As consumers demand environmentally conscious products, the cannabis industry is embracing sustainable practices to minimize its carbon footprint. In this article, we explore the intersection of sustainability and cannabis cultivation, looking at the innovative approaches’ we are taking to ensure a greener future.

Energy-efficient lighting

Traditional High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting used in cannabis cultivation consumes significant amounts of energy. Many growers are switching to LED lighting, which is not only more energy efficient, but also offers customizable spectrums to suit the specific growth stages of the plant. This change reduces energy consumption while maintaining optimal plant growth. All our production rooms are equipped with Fluence's Spider LED model, the best-in-class lighting system designed for efficient use in vertical farming. This also allows us to use multiple levels in our rooms. Thanks to Pipp Horticulture's structures, we can maximise space and make the most of the space available.

Water efficiency: Innovative irrigation

Water scarcity is a global issue, and the cannabis industry is addressing this challenge head on. We use water-efficient irrigation systems such as drip and recirculating systems. These methods minimise water wastage and ensure that only the necessary fresh Swiss mountain water is used. They also ensure that the plants receive the right amount of moisture at all times.

Heat recovery system

Our facilities are equipped with an advanced heat recovery system. This innovative facility uses the heat generated by our operations to efficiently heat offices and other areas. Any excess heat can be harnessed, stored and even sold externally, effectively increasing energy efficiency while minimizing waste.

Renewable Energy Integration

Cannabis cultivation requires a significant amount of energy, especially in indoor facilities. At Cannerald, we believe that responsible businesses have a duty to play an active role in protecting the environment. We are committed to managing our production processes in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. We source all of our electricity from renewable sources - specifically hydroelectric power.

Air management

We are also committed to sustainable air management. We use activated carbon filters, which effectively eliminate odors and improve air quality in our facilities. At the same time, we prioritize air recycling, reusing most air volumes and introducing only a minimum of 10% fresh air. This dual approach not only reduces our energy consumption but also ensures a discrete working environment.

Responsible growth

The marriage of cannabis cultivation and sustainability is a testament to the industry's commitment to responsible growth. By embracing innovative techniques, adopting green technologies and prioritizing environmental stewardship, we are paving the way for a greener future. As the industry evolves, sustainable practices will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the legacy of cannabis cultivation - one that embraces an environmentally conscious ethos while ensuring the supply of high-quality products that meet exacting demand.
