Prof. Xenofon Baraliakos is Head of Rheumatology at the Rheumazentrum Ruhrgebiet Herne and Professor of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He studied human medicine at the universities in Magdeburg and Berlin, Germany.
Prof. Baraliakos earned his board certification in orthopedic surgery in 2007 and in internal medicine and rheumatology in 2014. His research interests focus on the field of spondyloarthritides (SpA), with particular emphasis on imaging and treatment.
Prof. Baraliakos' awards include the EWRR Award in 2005, the EULAR Young Investigator Award in 2006 and 2008, the German Patient AS Society Award in 2010, and the Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the European Society for Clinical Investigations in 2014.
Prof. Baraliakos is a member of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA), and the German Society of Rheumatology. He is also a reviewer and associate editor of a variety of leading rheumatology journals.
Dr. Philipp Sewerin, MD, PHD
Philipp Sewerin is an associate professor and senior physician at the Rheumazentrum Ruhrgebiet, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, and a research group leader in the Hiller Research Unit for Rheumatology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied medicine at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and Zurich, Switzerland, and received his Ph.D. in 2013 with a thesis on "Effects of the prostaglandin analog iloprost on proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal progenitor cells."
After a postdoctoral stay at Harvard, he returned to Düsseldorf, Germany, where he received an assistant professorship and a lectureship in rheumatology entitled "The importance of magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosis, therapy monitoring and prediction of inflammatory joint diseases."
Dr. Sewerin's main research interests are in the area of biomarkers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and other rheumatic diseases. He is the Principal, Investigator, and Sub-Investigator for phase 2 to 4 good clinical practice clinical trials and is the musculoskeletal MRI expert for the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the ultrasound expert (especially arthrosonography) for the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR).
Dr. Sewerin has published widely on imaging in RA and is also a reviewer for numerous journals, including BMC, Arthritis & Rheumatology, and Arthritis Research & Therapy, as well as a member of the Editorial Board of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
Professor Totzeck is a senior physician at the Clinic for Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, West German Heart and Vascular Center, Essen University Hospital.
Professor Totzeck studied human medicine in Düsseldorf, Germany, and received his board certification in internal medicine and internal medicine and cardiology. His research focuses on acute cardiac injury and repair, with particular emphasis on acute myocardial infarction. Another focus is the damaging effects of cancer and cancer therapy ( cardio-oncology). Prof. Totzeck has about 100 publications in the above research areas. Methodologically, he has performed experimental, translational and clinical studies.
He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), co-chair of the Cardio-Oncology Working Group of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK), and founder and chair of the organization.
